I recently became aware of an organization called Two Doors located at 2984 Dewey Avenue at the intersection of Maiden Lane and Dewey Avenue in Greece, NY. Their mission at Two Doors is to provide emotional, developmental, social and educational resources and support for the children at risk, consistent with the mutual objectives of their families and schools. Their commitment is to influence by setting a positive example in accomplishing their mission.

Their legacy is our children. The more prepared they are to deal with the challenges and opportunities of a complex society, the better able they will be to secure a higher standard of living and quality of life for themselves.

Two Doors After-School program is designed for those who are presently exhibiting a reading or math achievement below grade level and for those that are in need of academic, social or emotional support.

Their Program Director trains and supervises volunteers to work at a 1:1 or 1:2 volunteer to student ratio. Students are supported in their homework for one hour each day, and participate in Circle Time where values like responsibility, respect, commitment, and making positive life choices are discussed.

Open activities include supervised work in their computer lab, crafts, games and physical fitness.

They  Build Self Esteem & Academic Confidence

  • Students complete homework
  • Make more friends
  • Have less anxiety about school
  • Have a sense of belonging
  • Have a positive attitude toward academics

Volunteers are a crucial part of all Two Doors Programs. Whether you have a few hours a month or several hours a week, they can put your skills to work helping our community. You can become a tutor in their After School Homework Assistance Program. You will work with one or two students to support their mastery of reading and math. Play educational games and serve as a role model of good manners, respect and positive attitudes. Many of their volunteers are retired school teachers, education students from area colleges, and high school students from Greece Central Schools, and retirees from Kodak and Xerox Corporation. Do you have a talent in art, crafts or have knowledge on a topic you would like to share with our youth? Each Friday is a special day at Two Doors. Whether you would like to lead a program or simply help with the students, you will find Cultural Arts Days are full of fun. They are also in need of regular SKILLS volunteers to assist students with projects.

These are just two of the many programs and opportunities available. If you are interested in learning more you can reach them at phone: 585-663-8936 Fax: 585-663-1235 or email thier program director: twodoorscrc.mfg@gmail.com o
